want reliability something that will last me about a year, but duno what to get. Dont wana have to get a crank tbh. please explain and give advice not just you have to have a crank with higher reving kits etc. thanks
keep it a iron bore , ive got a aluminium 70s with standard crank and its loosing reliability, match you'r pipe to you'r bore ( not just any pipe) and change you'r rollers and jets, if its done right it'l last years.
There's so many threads on here asking the same thing, there's a good one about matching exhausts to kits and gives an explanation why they're suited. How many miles has your standard crank covered already and is it in good condition? To be honest I believe there's more crank failures simply down to bad bearings than a failure of the actual crank itself, these things are designed to be used and used hard. Obviously if you're using a higher end kit producing more power at higher RPM then you're asking for trouble, but I see no reason that you can't get away with using it. I personally would agree with Derekjohns first post and keep it a cast iron sport, with a well suited pipe and some other modifications to the transmission and even a carb if you feel the need you'll have a 8 - 9bhp pocket rocket. If you're absolutely sold on going for something with a little bit more power, I'd go for the Polini Corsa kit, these things from memory can do around 11.5bhp. It's basically a Sport with harsher timings, this will put more stress on your bottom end but with the right pipe and it well set up it should be good for many, many miles. I cannot stress how important it is to have your scoot properly set up for it to be reliable, if necessary fit all your parts and take it to your local bike shop preferably where there's someone who's well in to their scooters and let them set it up for you. Not only will you then get the best performance from it but also the best reliability.
Cast irons kits are more reliable than alu ones however it all depends on the usage, maintenance and the tuning. I did have an alu mhr 70cc air cooled kit that lasted me for ever. As long as you set up your ped correctly, don't hammer on it if cold and maintain it well you can keep a 70cc kit for a while. Just make sure that you replace the rings when needed, or the piston (ensure you pick a different grade). The polini corsa is great. And lasts for ever but you can't use it on a standard crank. I'm planning to get one for my newly bought slider.
I know all that already mate but good reply cheers for that so do you reckon i could run a polini corsa on my standard crank Ive done abot 3000 km so far its an 11 plate zip. cheers
dont buy polini corsa anyway, its the exact same but with more porting, buy polini's standard bore and again look at (cough) ped ... parts (cough) .co.uk and their guide on porting is actually the standard polini bore =]
we've run a polini cast 70 set up on a zip with 21mm carb and uprated variator and clutch. Its been well used and still puts out good power, having been run on husquavana chainsaw 2 stroke oil all the time (its fairly clean, non-fouling and designed to rev WAY past anything a scoot engine can put out). The std crank had done 6000K when the engine was altered from totally standard and its still good
Thanks stig and muereg. Derek u love coughing dont u :L ? I have seen the ped parts blog but there boring me and new info is always usefull
well aparently you can say pedparts on here, but if you type donotlink ( a.d.r.e.n.a.l.i.n) it changes it =]
oh by the way if you dont want a sporty on you'r 70's itd be a good idea to buy a "standard" replacment, they'r non restrictive but still not high revving,
like the metrakit mk exhaust, its classed as a standard replacment but its alot less restrictive than some standard exhausts, was on a guide about reliable 70's
