long story short, the bike wasnt running so fiddled around with all the screws and wud jst like to know which way the mixture is turned to let more fuel as it starts but then bogs and cuts out straight away

Is this a Bike as in gears and things?

Is this the Aprillia in your sig?

If so throw it away :w00t: or ask on an Aprillia bike forum.

If not ignore that...the mixture screw (some times called and air screw depending on where it is on the carb) controls idle to 1/8th throttle.

If it located close to the manifold of the carb (down-stream of the slide) then opening it allows more fuel and richens the mixture.
If it is located closer to the air filter (upstream of the slide) then opening it allows more air and weakens the mixture.

The pilot jet is a fixed aperture so if no amount of adjustment makes any difference then it`s time to go up or down on the pilot.

If it starts and ticks over happily it`s not your mixture screw (although there is some bleed-over onto ) the next system which is the throttle slide cut-away or the next system which is the needle base diameter then the atomiser and needle clip position then the needle taper.

This has all been written a million times before on any site that deals with carb set-ups.

seconid the lack of compression, iridium plugs are useless... is there actually a spark?

i would also check the reeds.

    make sure they are sealing.

    they can cause problems.

ok, if theres compression spray a little wd40 into the carb at full throttle, then try start it wiht a little throttle.. only a lil bit. deffo strange theres a spark AND you tryd both carbs... ive had "compression" with half a piston missing... just coz your leg hurts doesent mean theres enough compression for the engine to run, theres 2 lots of compression in a 2 stroke aswerll... primary compression is hard to check really (slowly turn the engine by hand and i do mean slowly, if the reeds fart and a small ammount of air is escaping/squeeking then the oil seals are usually fine, easiest way to check wihtout taking thingsa off

still recon the rings are fucked tho.. could be soimmin else but from yourt discription its rings or oil seals..OR there is no delivery to the carb (altho the BODGE of throwing fuel down the plug hole WILL have an engine running without oil seals in there atall... not for long, and NEVER a good idea to do this. if fuel wont get to the cytlindert to start it what the hell is the point bunging TOO MUCH liquid fuel into the cyl;ionder... liquid wont compress like air, this DOES kill engines. even from doing it once.. dont do it again
