Hiya hope someone can point me in the right direction,

I have a drum brake mint 180 engine and a 125 casings, i want to put all of the 180 parts onto my 125 casings so that i can keep running my engine with the disc brake as my 180 engine is drum brake and has no caliper mounts for the conersion :(

I need someone to help me out and explain what needs to be done as i heard 180 borekit and cranks are not dirrect fit onto 125 gilera runner casings.

thanks very much any help would be great

just mod the barrel to fit the case or you loose primary compression. the 180 case is pritty poor compression wise

yup got the messaage... you have to make the skirt of the barrel thinner so it fits in the case obv.. id sudgest selling your 180 engine an building a 172 from the 125 case tbh.

if you have to ask i wouldent sudgest trying to mod the barrel yourself tbh

you wont be able to transfer the gears over though so it will be pretty quick but wont be as good top end

Why cant i transfer the gears over ?

I thpught you can as it still has the gear shaft for the disc hub to go over just not the caliper mounts on drum brake ?? is that correct ? :emb:

Also will the 180 crank fit perfectly into the 125 casings ?

    thansk everyone

180 crank fits fine an some are bigger so have more compression.. the gears wont fit as the 180 drum is an old shape engine and the wc disk is a new shape so the gearbox's are diff

    Hiya MiNoR cOnFuSiOn

my w/c disc engine has the oldershape gearbox and the oldershape sidecasing.

I DONT have the casing/gearbox with the outer bearing on the casing my engine is the older type with the clutch nut inside of the casing, if that makes sense :msn1:

So will the gearbox work ?

    cheers everyone

if both engines are the same type they will fit..

i think your wasting your time ripping apart a good engine to make another tho. especially a 180 with stockcrank. its just alot of risk to your parts for fuck all gain apart from a disc brake. sell the 180 engine complete and buy a new 172 and crank. will DEFFO know its a good un and you know it should be good for 20,000 miles

    just my 2 pence worth

Yea i do understand what your saying mate,

Its just i dont think i can get alot for the 180 engine also dont have time to sell it etc.

And i dont have money to blow on 172 kit and new crank just paid out for my insurance tax n mot :(

What do you mean a big risk to my parts isit that dodgy ?

crazy shit i need a job lol

    cheers

well, is there any real need for a disc brake then? if it aint broke dont fix it.. you will have the same engine in the end with a disc brake.. well a modded "bodged to fit a 125" 180 barrel and once you take a crank out of an engine and install it into another it looses ALOT of life...

luike i said is a brake worth braking down all the time down to rebuilding a decent engine that needed no work?

    lets look at the situation

disc brake = change of engine, hard to get hold of rear wheels, maybe wrong ratio gearbox as drums are 12 inch

drum brake = good enough for the bike. cheaper, already sorted and a 12 inch wheel so would be a little quicker :pimp:

    pro;,
disc brake and slightly higher proimary compression

    con;,
risk of killing crank, new mains required aswell as fitting of the old crank. cost of modding the barrel, new gasgets, less life on said crank, having to take out/refit engine, 13" wheel needed, new caliper, new master cylinder, blah blah

weigh it up m8.. aint worth it.

best bet is find a decetn built 125 engine in stock form an spend whatever money you would have on mains an engine work on a 172.. sell the 125 and 180 engine an you got a free minted 172 engine with a FRESH BARREL

    making sence now?
