Hi guys, on my 1993 skipper 125 the topend is pretty much dead after 14,000miles on the clock (ive heard they should last around 15,000 so almost there).. Should my standard crank be able to handle the 172 power? Obviously I will check for play when fitting, and if I have to I will rebuild the bottom end too but really wanna avoid it. It will be running with a 25mm carb also and a stock pipe (or my shitty kundo). Everytime I remove the tranny cover, theres a small puddle of oil laying just below the front pullys (where the starter motor should be, right below/next to the oil pump throttle linkage thingymajiggy), is this just my pump leaking abit OR would you say the seals are fukuked? Cheeerrs for any help bossmandemz
most likely to be seals, remove the variator and check the seal. i personally would not advice you use the stock crank spacialy one of such milage. anytime i fit a 172 kit i always do mains and seals, have used a few stock cranks but have all been low milage items. id suggest you use the stock 125 and run that till it dies in the mean time saving some dosh (if you have to) for a good crank and kit (mains and seals go without saying).
I think I will just buy another engine to build up.. Its an old "L" reg engine, might try to find a rolling nutter. Ive had the variator off many many times and havent noticed the oil coming from behind it.. Might just be the pump leaking. No wonder why this engine runs so lean lol the mix & idle screws on the carb have to be fully wound in for it to run!
sound like compression is on the low side then pal , second engine is always good, i normaly have a rebuilt stock engine on stand-by
Yh gonna build me a 172 engine then probably just rebuild the L reg engine with stock parts.. Compression isent TOO bad the bike will start within a few kicks from cold, but it will ONLY run with the airmix & idle screw wound ALL the way in (and it still doesent idle very well lol) I did take a peek into the exhaust port when changing pipes, the piston didnt look happy lol scored up to fuck.. Still runs really well @ full throttle tho, boggy lowend and wont tickover.. Needs a new topend & carb I think.. Probably new mains and seals too.
engines on its way out, you wont find a replacment crank for the old old engines.. you need to grind fuck out of them and fit a new type crank, this leaves you with a VERRY weak crankcase... use it till it pops, in the meantime find yourself a newer shape engine and spend your dogh on that...
sounds like your old engine has oil problems especially if its scored the top end they will run but its a known fact a scored top end will not idle properly anyway no matter what you do
Yh shes pretty knackard now! It even backfires when you kickstart from cold, really loud backfires ive never heard on a 2T before! Thanks for the info minor! I was gonna rebuild the old engine but now I will get a newer shape engine, what engines should I look out for? Are the rolling nut motors the best of the 2 strokes?
reeds are the major cause of most backfires, but as monty said the seals are probably fucked, wich would do the same thing.... ie not let the case seal... if its the reeds you will not only get flames and pops out of the exhaust but you will also get the obvious blowback (ie the carb has air pushed through it in reverse) so you get pops an farts and sometimes fires out the back of the carb.... can throw some rings and seals at it, or seals and a fresh top end and just scorce yourself a nice set of cases and a crank, some bearings and have it sat waiting....
I think the actual crankshaft itself is ok, the engine has been ran stock its entire life and the mileage isent really high. So I may take your advise minor, just throw some new seals and bearings in, topend rebuild with stock 125 parts, maybe do a little porting on the exhaust port and chuck some new reeds and a carb at it. Come to think of it, I have a set of malossi reeds from my old cast iron 70kit, could I bung these in? I dont wanna go 172'ing an engine that I cant buy a brand new crank for if it snapped. I will have to sorce a series 2 or rolling nut engine to build a one sevens, would you happen to have one of these laying around minor? Im trying to get rid of my dna 125 to fund a new engine for the skipper so il have some readies sooon! When I get round to rebuilding the old engine (and newer engine) bottom ends, il PM you for a quote to fit the seals & bearing as I lack tools at the moment, new manager at work wont allow me to work on my bike during lunch hours!! But il let ya know when the time comes
ye no worries, as for engines, they come and go, ask me when you have the cash in your pocket and im sure i can sort something out.. as for the rebuild, just pm me when your ready
