after a long days work i finaly got my 172 kit fitted on my 2003 typhoon. i warmed it up and let it cool down twice and then took for a nice long ride in the sun. it pulls like a train and ive gained a nice 25mph over my standard 125. its now showing 85mph on the clock not sure what the true speed is my guest is 70mph. everything else is stock apart from i upjetted to a 90 main jet as it was running too lean with the 88 in. next step is malossi multivar and a pm59 pipe + malossi gear up kit.

Good on you, mate, I've got my 172 kit now, and if it ever stops raining I'll put it in. Any tips for me on the fitting? In the box there are two (double)reed petals, one is dark grey, the other lighter grey. Which did you use, and why do they give two sets? You upped the main jet, did you raise the needle as well?

here is what i dont and in what order, asuming your already have your old barrel and head off.

take everything out of the malossi box and place on a clean work place ie towl ect. once you have removed your old head and barrel tuck something into the engine to stop anything nasty falling into your crack case. Now your ready to roll with the new kit, first thing you need to place one of the circlips into either side of the piston making sure its in tight (make sure its in tight). Now the piston pin rub some 2 stroke oil on it and slid into the opposite side from where you just fitted your circlip, make sure you only push the pin in so it does not cover the slot where the rod is going to fit. Once this is done you can now start with the piston ring, you will have 2 rings with the malossi kit one top and one bottom each will have a stopper in the ring slot you need to push the rings tight upto the stops and this will stop the rings from slipping and the piston. now the rings are fitted rub some 2 stroke oil over the piston and also rub some onto the inside of the new barrel.now fit your main gasket and take your new barrel whilst holding your piston rings tight and slide your barrel slowly over the piston (this might take a few trys as the rings like to slip). Once you have the new barrel fitted its time for your new head, take your head and line it up with the studs on the barrel it will only fit 1 way so what ever you do dont false it ok. once the head is on tighten each nut one at a time make sure you dont over tighten them as this will cause you a great problems. Now your head is fitted insert a brand new spark plug and start your bike (i recomend you kick start it as the engine is now empty and will take a while to get going and it may dead your battery. once you get it started just let it warm it up 10 mins and then cool down for 10 mins do this 2 or 3 times and then take it for a blast arround the block.

Thanks for that, actually I have upsized a couple of Piaggio 50s before, so it's really the tuning that I'm interested in. Apart from upping the main jet to 90 (was that enough increase?), did you lift the needle? And which of the two sets of reed petals did you use?

you should never lift your needle unless you need to. start off with a 92 main jet for standard carb or a 102 for 25mm and run your bike and check your spark plug for signs if it need to be richer or leaner. just go up or down in jet sizes untill you get your spark plug a nice chocolate brown color. i recomend a 25mm carb, all tho a 25mm will not give you anymore speed it will improve throttle respone alot. also if your planning on doing long trips think about getting yourself a gear up kit and it will be better for you. if you need help with anything else just PM me mate.
