did you drive it without air box whilst mudguard was off ? it sounds like its sucked something into carb
check you've put air box on properly, what did you mean by revs on the spot ?

they are re-buildable , which i was about to embark on till i broke an alloy casting. ended up using a s\h set off a 50 typhoon.
